Proactive Care for Healthier, Longer-Lived Trees

Trees in the Salt Lake Valley face a unique combination of stressors. Our alkaline soils with pH levels often exceeding 8.0 lock up essential micronutrients like iron and manganese, causing chlorosis that weakens trees over time. Utah's semi-arid climate creates drought stress during summer months, while heavy clay soils can lead to root suffocation and poor drainage. Add to this a growing list of pests and diseases—from bark beetles to fireblight—and it becomes clear why proactive tree health care is essential.

Canyon Crown Tree's health care program is built on the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Rather than applying broad-spectrum chemicals on a rigid calendar, we monitor your trees throughout the growing season, identify specific problems as they emerge, and apply targeted treatments using the least-toxic effective methods. This approach protects beneficial insects, reduces unnecessary chemical use, and delivers superior long-term results.

Our diagnostic services go well beyond a visual inspection. We evaluate soil conditions, root zone health, canopy density, leaf coloration, bark integrity, and the presence of pest activity or disease symptoms. When laboratory analysis is needed, we collect samples and work with Utah State University Extension and commercial labs to pinpoint the exact pathogen or deficiency affecting your trees.

Iron chlorosis is the most common tree health problem in Salt Lake City. If your tree's leaves are yellow with green veins, call us for a trunk injection consultation—we can often treat it in a single visit.

Our treatment toolbox includes trunk injection for iron chlorosis and systemic insecticide delivery, deep root fertilization that bypasses competing turf grass roots, soil amendment with sulfur and organic matter to improve pH and structure, targeted foliar sprays for aphids, mites, and scale insects, and anti-fungal applications for diseases such as fireblight, anthracnose, and cytospora canker. We also offer ongoing monitoring programs with scheduled quarterly visits to catch problems early before they become irreversible.

Our Tree Health Care Approach

Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment strategies tailored to Utah's challenging growing conditions.

Comprehensive Diagnosis

Our ISA-certified arborists evaluate soil conditions, root health, canopy density, and pest or disease activity to identify the root cause of decline—not just the symptoms.

Integrated Pest Management

Our IPM approach prioritizes monitoring and prevention, applying targeted treatments only when necessary to protect your trees while preserving beneficial insects and pollinators.

Iron Chlorosis Treatment

We specialize in trunk injection with chelated iron, the most effective treatment for the interveinal yellowing caused by Salt Lake City's high-pH alkaline soils.

Deep Root Fertilization

Liquid fertilizer is injected 8 to 12 inches below grade directly into the root zone, delivering customized nutrients and mycorrhizae where your trees need them most.

Ongoing Monitoring Programs

Quarterly site visits by a certified arborist catch emerging issues early, track treatment progress, and adjust care plans seasonally for optimal tree health year-round.

Lab-Based Diagnostics

When visual diagnosis is not conclusive, we collect soil and tissue samples for laboratory analysis through USU Extension and commercial labs to identify exact pathogens.

Our Health Care Process

A systematic approach from diagnosis through treatment and ongoing monitoring.

1

On-Site Health Assessment

An ISA-certified arborist conducts a thorough evaluation of your trees, examining foliage, bark, root zone, soil conditions, and signs of pest or disease activity.

2

Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

We identify the specific issue, explain our findings in plain language, and present a prioritized treatment plan with costs. Lab testing is arranged when needed.

3

Targeted Treatment

We apply the appropriate treatment—trunk injection, deep root fertilization, foliar spray, soil amendment, or pruning—timed for maximum effectiveness.

4

Follow-Up & Monitoring

We schedule follow-up visits to evaluate treatment response and adjust the care plan. Optional quarterly monitoring keeps your trees on track season after season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tree health care in the Salt Lake City area.

Interveinal chlorosis, where the tissue between leaf veins turns yellow while the veins stay green, is the hallmark symptom of iron chlorosis. This is extremely common in the Salt Lake Valley due to our alkaline soils with a high pH, typically between 7.5 and 8.5, which locks up iron and makes it unavailable to trees. Red maples, silver maples, pin oaks, and river birch are especially susceptible. Trunk injection with chelated iron is the most effective treatment, and our arborists can diagnose and treat this condition during a single visit.

IPM is a science-based approach to pest and disease management that prioritizes prevention and uses the least-toxic effective methods. Rather than spraying broad-spectrum pesticides on a calendar schedule, we monitor your trees regularly, identify specific pests or diseases, and apply targeted treatments only when needed. This approach protects beneficial insects like pollinators, reduces chemical use, and achieves better long-term results for tree health.

Deep root fertilization uses specialized equipment to inject a liquid fertilizer blend directly into the root zone, typically 8 to 12 inches below the soil surface. This bypasses the turf grass root layer that competes for nutrients and delivers macronutrients, micronutrients, and beneficial mycorrhizae directly to the tree's feeder roots. We customize the fertilizer formulation based on soil test results, addressing the specific deficiencies present on your property.

Warning signs include yellowing or browning leaves outside of normal fall color change, premature leaf drop, wilting despite adequate water, cankers or oozing sap on the trunk, small exit holes in the bark, sawdust-like frass at the base of the tree, unusual growths or galls, and thinning canopy. If you notice any of these symptoms, we recommend scheduling a professional health assessment. Early diagnosis is critical for effective treatment of most tree diseases and pest infestations.

★★★★★

“Our beautiful red maple had been turning yellow for two summers, and I thought it was dying. Canyon Crown Tree's arborist diagnosed iron chlorosis, did a trunk injection on the spot, and within six weeks the leaves were green again. They also set us up on a monitoring program so it stays healthy. Their knowledge of Utah-specific tree issues is unmatched.”
